1) Get a permit
The first step is to get a permit from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) before starting the installation. It has to be done by the person doing the installation. If you hired a licensed electrician, they will file a notification of work with ESA for installation and provide you with a certificate of acceptance once the work has been completed and accepted as compliant with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. You may ask them for a copy to keep for your records.
2) Hire a licensed Electrician
It is required that the Electric Vehicle charger is installed by a licensed electrician and in compliance with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
3) Use certified equipment
Make sure that all the equipment is certified for use in Canada by nationally recognized certification agencies such as Canadian Standards Association, Underwriters Laboratories Inc., Intertek Testing Services or shows other certification marks approved by ESA.
4) Ensure your Electrical Panel is compatible
Since electric vehicles use a lot of power, your EV charger will be squeezing a lot of juice from the electrical panel. So, it is important to make sure your panel can handle the extra load. If in case you find that you need to upgrade your electrical panel, you will need to contact your local utility. A licensed electrician will be able to guide you through the process.
